Schools that Change Communities - An Integrated Curriculium Project

Presentation Category:
Curriculum Integration
Session Type:
CPA Session
Presentation Description:
Watsonville, CA is a small farming community with many of its residents originating from Mexico. The community is challenged with issues associated with immigration, low wages, illiteracy, hunger, low employment, overcrowding, health concerns, gang violence and education. The scope of our project was to look at and study the similarities between the current issues that face our community and how they are similar to the beginning of the "New Deal" of 1932. Students evaluated and researched these similarities and compared the results of their research to the community issues of today. Students compiled their findings through production of community based video documentaries and debriefed in class with the showing of their findings. Videos were also entered into local film festivals for community viewing. In our presentation we will examine the process of collaboration between four disciplines and show part of the PBS Documentary on our project that students helped create.
