Creating Opportunities for Teacher Leadership

Presentation Category:

Session Type:
CA Career Pathways Session
Presentation Description:
WCCUSD is transforming the high school experience of our students through implementing a system of Linked Learning pathways. With 19 pathways to support (most of which being California Partnership Academies), the District is developing new opportunities for teacher leaders in support of our pathways through building our capacity around pathway coaching. At 5 of our 6 high schools, pathway teacher leaders have been trained as Linked Learning Coaches, through training offered by our partner ConnectEd California. These new leaders are site based, supporting anywhere from 1-5 pathways, and are focused on a common coaching approach centered on building Communities of Practice. Our pathway coaches work with pathway teams and lead teachers at their sites to develop their programs following the Linked Learning Criteria for Certification and Continuous Improvement as our guide. Building this internal capacity relies on distributed leadership; leadership is not centralized at the District Office, but embedded in the teacher community. Our presentation will focus on the strategies used to build our coaching community and some of the essential models and tools that guide our practice.
